Mammal Survey in Vu Quang National Park, Ha Tinh Province
This project aims to re-assess the diversity of large mammals, their distribution and conservation status at the national park. A number of elephants, red-shanked douc langur, lorises, macaques and other mammals have been encountered by the survey.
We have co-operated with the Management Board of Vu Quang National Park to conduct a long-term biodiversity monitoring program for its animal resources. The project also helps to make an assessment of the influence of hydropower construct building process to the animals. A group of at least 4 elephant individuals has been found. At least 4 groups of red-shanked douc langurs, ca. 70 individuals totally, have been encountered during the survey. Sighting of macaques, lorises, wild pigs also reported by our team members. Several tracks of other large mammals, such as bear and otters have been recorded. We have also collected data of conservation status of these mammals via counting the frequencies of meeting hunter camps, logger tracks, local people in the protected areas.
